Ever watch the PBS pledge shows with Wayne Dyer offering his “Whole Enchilada” multi media self help set?
If you haven’t caught the pitch, I will give you an idea of the program.
Obviously I travel a lot and am in hotel rooms for a third of my life, which means I surf the TV with great frequency. What channel I land on depends on my mood and demeanor. I might feel like mindless programs or sports reporter shows. I dig documentary-type of films and shows. Mostly, I enjoy seeing something that uplifts and enlightens.
That is the intention of a Wayne Dyer presentation, as he is one of the most respected men in the spiritual field. He has written numerous books and made videos that espouse many different roads and perspectives, but all have the same goal – to spread love and goodness throughout the world.
One thing I garner from his messages is that we are all one on this planet. We share common thoughts, fears and doubts, and he gives us some tools to assist us in our journey.
I respond to him (as well as other spiritual leaders and self awareness dispensers), and believe he is adding to our world in a positive way.
I wish there were shows like this on a major network. Why can’t they give us something that inspires or encourages us to seek a higher level of existence? Replace “The Amazing Race” with “The Amazing Grace.” How about supplanting “Last Comic Standing” with “Together We Stand”?
I am offended by the diet of voyeuristic and shallow-minded stuff we are forced to eat. Is greed really that much a motivator?
Since PBS is publicly funded, they can give us something of quality like Wayne Dyer. They are not beholden to the fear-based honchos who do not listen to their own intuition, but are slaves to an agenda that is set forth by a contingent of sheep who put out the stuff of least common denominator.
I took notes today as I watched the special about the Tao, but doubt I would take out a pen to jot down much from a Survivor episode. “Wow, let me get this down – go behind my friend’s back and tell 3 million viewers their secrets that they confided me with.”
Surely, I will achieve great inner peace and understanding by taking such actions.
Ironically, when the networks try the higher level living, it pays off. Once in a while Larry King throws in shows about methods of better wellness in between the crap about the hottie pedophile high school teacher, the latest blonde girl who is missing or lawyers for a star who is three days out of rehab and turned their life around.
Larry had a show about “The Secret,” a very popular book/DVD which teaches us how we can have anything we desire through good thought and conscious actions. It was one of CNN’s top rated shows, so much so that they had an encore only a week later. It came back by popular demand, as the audience spoke.
So, there is a space in people’s hearts for consuming something good for them, while eschewing the fast food of hostage taking, school shootings and celebrity makeovers.
Deep down, does our society want to search their soul for better answers, or listen to the latest star’s search for the perfect plastic surgeon?
I’m holding hope that it’s not the latter. I’ll keep asking that if the universe and my secret will come true.
I guess it’s not a secret any more…

Went from "The Force Be With Us" ... to the Farce be with us.
Craig, you are ABSOLUTELY right. One thing that impresses me with your thoughts here is that you really do have to be intelligent to be a comedian. Comedians look at life through a different set of lenses.
You know it's not just self-awareness gurus that television has garnered us with. I prefer to say that the Deepok Chopra's and Dwayne Dyers (I have their books), were created because of the old addage that for every action there is a reaction.
In the old days (hurts to say that) we had Andy of Mayberry. Did Andy of Mayberry tell us how to live a good life? My Gosh, the man lived with his doding Aunt so his kid could have a good home cooked meal. Maybe we can't all be like the Cleavers, but was there anything really WRONG with that? Not really. Oh, wait, it gave the wrong image of the Mom, NOW wouldn't stand for that. I forgot.
Little House on the Prairie? The whole purpose was how to live better. I remember when they addressed the issue of divorce. It was dead on perfect, and moral. Seventh Heaven? Always a great lesson in life to be learned there. Heck even the Brady Bunch made me feel better than "The Greatest Loser".
So they force all this crap on us and someone like Dwayne Dyer stands up and says, hey, let's do something good. Like we used to. And they put him on UHF Channel 353 where you have to get there by accident.
Take Care Craigie and there will be a whole bunch of people waiting for you here in Denver. We need more self awareness from you! Keep on keepin' on Man.
